Crochet Capital A Pennant – FREE Pattern

I was a little worried that creating this crochet capital A pennant would be pretty tricky due to the shape of the letter A. Tapestry crochet, the technique used in this pattern, looks the cleanest with letters that are made up of straight vertical and horizontal lines. However, creating this letter A pennant was not as hard as I anticipated since everything is symmetric. In any case, I’ve already done the grunt work – you can just sit back and enjoy this free pattern!

What type of yarn should I use to make a crochet capital A Pennant?

Pretty much any type of worsted-weight yarn will work for this pattern, which makes it great for using up scrap yarn! Keep in mind that there should be a high contrast between the background and letter colors so that the A is easy to see. I used white because it pops against the vibrant background color and gives my finished banner a more cheerful feel. Other than that, go wild! Mix and match variegated and solid yarns or stick to simple solid colors– the choice is yours!

This crochet capital A pennant is approximately 2.75” wide and 4.25” long. I used worsted weight yarn and a 4.5 mm crochet hook to achieve this size. The finished size of the pennant will depend on the weight of yarn used and how tightly you crochet, but the gauge is not critical. If you would like the pennants to be bigger or smaller, either increase or decrease your yarn weight and/or hook size. Like I said before, this project is so easy to customize!

Required Techniques

This project requires basic crochet skills, including the chain stitch, single crochet, single crochet decrease, and color change. The technique used to create the letters is called tapestry crochet. While working on the design for each letter, you will be working with two strands of yarn: one for the background, and one for the letter. The strand of yarn that is not being used will be laid along the row of stitches you are crocheting into. When adding the next stitch, you will be crocheting around the “inactive” strand of yarn and the stitch from the previous row. Every time you switch between colors, you must perform a color change stitch and change which strand of yarn is “inactive.” Thankfully, this method prevents you from having to weave in a million ends when you are done!
